Modular construction technology will be deployed to build a temporary permanent market for merchants of the Seocheon Specialized Market in South Chungcheong Province, who lost their livelihoods in a massive fire last month.
PLANM, a leading modular specialist, announced on the 28th that it signed a free modular lease agreement with Seocheon County on the 27th to facilitate the full-scale reconstruction of the market. Modular construction is a method where the main structures of a building are pre-fabricated in an external factory, transported to the site, and then assembled. This technology is gaining spotlight as a next-generation eco-friendly method, as it can reduce construction time by up to 50% while minimizing noise, dust, and waste.
The Seocheon Specialized Market suffered the loss of 227 shops due to a fire in January, just ahead of the Lunar New Year holiday.
PLANM plans to manufacture and provide modular units for the temporary market for up to two years until the original market is fully restored. Excluding minimal installation costs, the company will waive rental fees worth approximately 4 billion KRW (approx. $3 million USD). Seocheon County intends to reallocate the saved budget toward local welfare projects.
PLANM aims to install a total of 44 modular units, allowing 79 shops to resume business. Lee Min-kyu, CEO of PLANM, stated, "We are grateful to be able to assist local governments and the community using our specialized expertise. We will do our utmost to ensure high-quality construction so that market merchants can return to normal business operations as quickly as possible."
As South Korea's No. 1 company in eco-friendly school modular solutions, PLANM continues its commitment to social contribution, including a 10 billion KRW donation agreement with Kyonggi University and a 5 billion KRW free lease agreement with Seoul Daebang Elementary School.
