PLANM Pursues Technical Cooperation with LH and Others to Vitalize Modular Housing
PLANM, an eco-friendly modular specialist, has signed a technical cooperation MOU with LH, the Smart Modular Forum, the Korea Iron & Steel Association, LG Electronics, NRB, Yoochang E&C, and Xi Geist. This agreement serves as a follow-up to the "2030 LH OSC Housing Roadmap" aimed at vitalizing the modular housing market.
'OSC (Off-Site Construction)' refers to a method where more than 80% of major building components are pre-fabricated in a factory before being transported and assembled on-site. As labor shortages in the construction industry intensify due to an aging workforce—leading to real risks of declining quality and productivity—modular construction is gaining significant attention as a viable alternative.
According to PLANM on the 21st, modular housing departs from traditional site-centered construction by producing over 80% of standardized and normalized modules in a factory setting before final installation on-site.
The modular method offers numerous advantages, including shorter construction timelines, reduced waste, lower carbon emissions, and the mitigation of environmental issues such as noise, vibration, and dust. It also effectively addresses the challenges of an aging construction workforce and the shortage of skilled laborers.
To solve the industry's pressing challenges and promote modular housing, PLANM plans to collaborate with leading partner companies to secure high-rise technologies and develop standardized platform systems. This collaboration includes working with manufacturers, architects, and construction firms to develop specialized standard floor plans and improve quality through dry construction methods and floor noise reduction.
In the mid-to-long term, the participating organizations plan to join national R&D projects to overcome technical and institutional hurdles. The goal is to achieve world-class residential performance that can induce voluntary private investment.
Lee Min-gyu, CEO of PLANM, stated, "If we succeed in developing technologies for modular high-rises and standardization, supported by the necessary institutional mechanisms and government support, we can drive innovative growth across the entire modular ecosystem and lead the global market with 'K-Modular.'"
